Naka Naka Dupont Naka (No to DuPont) Dir. Partha Sarkar and Reena Kukreja/ Beta/24 min./ English/1998 Dupont, the world’s largest nylon manufacturer, paid out an estimated $ 1 million a month in fines and law suit settlements for environmental and public health infractions in 1989 in United States of America. In 1998, Dupont decided to set up a plant to manufacture nylon 6.6 near Ponda in Goa, India. Environmentalists feared that waste runoff from the plant would destroy the farmers’ fields, pollute drinking water and kill aquatic life in the nearby Mandvi river. They supplied the local activists with details about outdated technology DuPont was bringing in and the damage it would do to the fragile eco-system of the area. Some villages joined the struggle and soon it became a mass movement. In 1995, it was forced to abandon its plans despite having invested considerable money due to the sustained agitation by the local people to protect their environment. The film ‘Naka Naka Dupont Naka’ is the story of the peoples’ triumph over the multinational company and a sterling model for similar struggles. "Naka, Naka" examines the dynamics of the entire movement from the villagers’ point of view. Environment groups in India and elsewhere have used this film to arouse communities facing environmental dislocation because of TNC activities.
